Reaching Out to the Youth (May 2010)

Our PSPE members are working in the community - introducing local youths to engineering design. Below is a testimony to the efforts of Khal, with Pennoni Associates, in leading our society by supporting students at Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown, Pa.

"FIRST Robotics Team 433, The Firebirds, would like to thank the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Philadelphia Chapter for the generous sponsorship provided to their robotics team during the 2009-2010 season.

This commitment enabled the Firebirds to build a highly competitive robot. Additionally, support from your organization enabled the Firebirds to advance a number of projects that positioned the team to win FIRST Robotics' highest award, the Chairman's Award, at the Pittsburgh Regional competition, attended by 34 other high school teams. The Firebirds also won this top award at the Philadelphia Regional Competition in 2009.

The Firebirds are the longest running, all-female high school robotics team in the United States. The Firebirds have 68 team members, representing 12% of their high school's student body. There are over 3,500 FIRST robotics teams in the country, but, unfortunately, female representation across these teams averages just 25%. The Firebirds' dual mission is to serve as Engineering and Science mentors in the local, national and international communities; and to increase the participation of young women in Engineering and Science careers through FIRST Robotics. The Firebirds take this responsibility very seriously as 80% of Firebird graduates go on to major in Engineering, Math or Science disciplines in college.

The Firebirds actively promote the importance of Engineering and Science in their outreach programs to organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America and in local elementary schools where they mentor junior robotics programs. It is a privilege for the Firebirds to be sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Philadelphia Chapter because of your strong commitment to Engineering and Science education and training for students".
